I’m John. Born 2nd June 1972 son to Ellen and Paul Gilmour and raised in Hyde.I went to Flowery field primary and junior school now long gone and grown over with weeds. I went to Flowery Field secondary school later named Hyde High School. My first job was as a weaver at Ashton brothers “Zorbit”, where I first got my experience of being a First Aider. From here I became a volunteer at Tameside General Hospital and became to find my calling in life. To help people. I would work in the Mill from 06:00 till 14:00 then travel by 330 bus service to Ashton and volunteer at he medical wards of The Stamford Building till 6 or 7pm then catch the bus back home, feeling I’d done a good job helping those who where in pain and those lonely that had no visitors. I progressed into working as a Nursing Assistant or Healthcare assistant in the field of Dementia and Alzhiemers in the elderly on Ward 21A and 21B, again these wards have long gone and demolished to make the new Tameside Hospital as we now it today. I used to watch the student nurses join our teams and appear so I grossed in their work, which I used to sit in and learn this wonderful new language of learning. I then managed to enrol on a course at Tameside College “The Institute of Welfare Officers Course”. This course would be similar to the access to nursing course as we now today. I passed the course and got accepted into Manchester University nursing course. I eventually completed my training and entered my first staff nurse role in Theatres at Wythenshaw & Withington hospital. I realised this wasn’t my forte and decided to enter the field of Emergency Care. I got my first Staff nurse post in Accident & Emergency at Tameside hospital in 1999 and never looked back. I’ve worked with some of the best doctors and nurses and well, best human beings ever… i progressed through the levels of nursing with help from those around me and by 2003 I started to develop a belief I can do greater things if I put my mind to it. I worked as a pilot test nurse for the Walk in Centre based at Manchester Airport and also as Emergency Nursing Officer at the airport whilst working in A&E. From here I worked in Saudi Arabia as nurse practitioner in Occupational Health during the Gulf War, looking after the pilots and ground crews of British Aerospace and Saudi Royal Airforce. I came back to England and took up where I left off back in A&E and experienced working asa bed manager for some time. I now had more confidence and experienced working in various hospitals across the region. Wigan Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Preston royal infirmary, Salford Royal and later Prestwich Hospital. One of my most pivotal roles was that of Senior nurse for a private company which worked over the Police Custodies. Here I flourished and learnt new skills in leading a team. I went to night school and gained my Certificate in Education from the University of Huddersfield. this was the catalyst for my current role in teaching and training. I worked in the training division of Salford Royal for a year on a secondment from Emergency Care, at end of the time there was no full time role so I made the decision to leave and start my own First Aid company. Im now also the Founder of Lifeline Community Ambulance, which offers transport to those in need across our region ensuring vital appointments are attended. My aim is to establish a fully staffed service consisting of paid and volunteer staff to continue to grow the service. we need more volunteers and sponsors as our ambulance is getting to the end of its life. The ambulance has over 325,000 miles in service and we now need to upgradeto a wheelchair accessible minibus.
